Pre-requisites

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016.

Introduction

In this blog, I am going to showcase how to set session timeout on the NAV window.

Scenario: The session timeout is 15 minutes; if the client connection is inactive for more than 15 minutes, the connection is lost.

Let’s have a look at the setting for session time out.

  • The default value of Idle Client timeout is MaxValue, which means that there is no time limit to the session and means the session will remain always be active.
  • Click on edit and Set Idle Client Timeout to 00:15:00 and Keep Client Timeout to 00:17:00 (format is HH:MM:SS) on the Client services setting on the Microsoft Dynamics NAV server and save it.
  • Make sure the Keep Alive Interval value must be larger than the Idle client timeout setting as it will check that the idle client session will timeout after 15 minutes.
  • Keep Alive internal setting specifies an initial activity period between keep alive messages that are sent from the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Windows client to the Microsoft Dynamics NAV server to avoid the client session from going into an idle state.
  • The Keep Alive value higher than the idle client timeout setting will timeout after 15 minutes.
  • If we set “Keep Alive Interval” to less than 15 min then the client session would never timeout because keep alive message will send to the server before the 15 minutes so would never qualify for 15 minutes.
  • After saving the Idle Client timeout and Keep Client Interval values, restart the server.
  • If the user attempts any activity on the window after 15 minutes, an error message window will appear on the dynamic NAV window as shown below.

Hope this helps!
